Reason- state felt that claims paid out by insurance companies are much less than the gross premium collected by them
Example Andhra Pradesh gross premium 1301.1 crore while claim for 730.7 crore
Implication- Farmers contribute to gross premium is very small (2% for all kharif crop, 1.5% for all rabi crops) and 5% for annual commercial and horticulture.
PM Fasal Bima Yojana launched in 2016 and being administrated by Ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare
It provide a comprehensive insurance cover against failure of crop thus helping stabilizing the income of the farmers.
Initially it was mandatory later made voluntary.
