2. OPEC and its allies agree to cut oil production by about 10% till July.
Organisation of the petroleum exporting countries.
Nearly 10 million barrel of oil a day production will be cut.
Why- excess production depression prices as global aviation remains largely grounded due to the pandemic.
OPEC- The organisation of petroleum exporting countries is an intergovernmental organisation of 13 Nations. Founded on 14 September 1960 in Baghdad by the first five members ( Iran Iraq Kuwait Saudi Arabia and Venezuela) . OPEC countries accounted for an estimate of 44% of global oil production.
The stated mission of the organisation is to co-ordinate and unify the petroleum policies of its member countries and ensure the stabilization of oil market in order to secure and efficient economic and regular supply of petroleum to customers.
Due to covid-19 pandemic the demand for OPEC oil has fallen to 30 year low in second quarter of 2020.
